UofL Belknap Campus Self-Guided Tree Tour
Hosted by the University of Louisville
Although located in an urban area, the University of Lousiville's 309-acre park-like Belknap campus has over 2,500 trees representing over 130 species, many of which are native to our bioregion. UofL researchers and students have helped catalog over 1,740 individual trees just on the core of Belknap campus that represent a total of 117 species from 54 genera.
Take a self-guided 2-mile walking tour of some of the interesting and historical trees on Belknap campus! The map can be accessed online with your smartphone, tablet or any computer, or pick up a print version during business hours at the North Information Center, 1999 S. 1st St (call 502-852-6565 for information).

Invasive Plant Management Volunteer Event
Hosted by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy and Derby City CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area)
Location: Iroquois Park, 2120 Rundill Rd, Louisville, KY 40214
Please join Olmsted Parks Conservancy in Iroquois Park as we tackle some populations of problematic plants along the forest edge near the disc golf course and pond.
Editing out introduced species like bush honeysuckle can open up more space for biodiversity and improve forest health.
Notes: We will provide tools, gloves and guidance. The meeting site is at the Disc Golf Course end of the large Amphitheater parking lot, just off New Cut Road. Please dress for the weather and bring a water bottle!

Urban Tree Walk

Celebrate Tree Week and take a walk with The Plant Kingdom to learn all about planting trees in an urban environment, as well as the important part trees play in our personal health and how they can foster a vibrant community. We will view and discuss mature trees that are best for these unique environments as well as examples of poor tree selection and common maintenance practices that are harming our urban tree canopy.
Our walk will begin at The Plant Kingdom, 1000 E Market Street, and continue across the street to Home of the Innocents and neighboring businesses. Our Horticulturists will be on hand to answer any tree questions you may have during the walk as well as back at our store once the walk has concluded.
Notes: This event is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration will close on Friday, October 10th at 11am.
Parking Lot access on Baxter Avenue and Jefferson Street. Please park in large parking area aross from our main entrance. A team member will be waiting at our front gate to check you in.

Walk and Write with Kentucky Poet Laureate

From the time of the ancient philosophers, we’ve known that walking in nature fosters creativity and imaginative thinking.
Kentucky Poet Laureate Kathleen Driskell has written and published many poems and essays that first began percolating on her regular walks in the Parklands. Join her on October 11, 2025 at 10:00am in the PNC Achievement Center to walk the Black Willow Trail, stopping briefly along the way to take photographs or make notes describing whatever strikes your fancy.
When we complete our leisurely hike, we’ll return to the PNC Center to discuss what makes a good poem or short essay and begin to write using what we’ve discovered on our walk.
Kathleen Driskell is an award-winning teacher, poet, and essayist who has published many books of poems and was recently appointed Kentucky Poet Laureate by Governor Andy Beshear. She is professor of creative writing and Chair of the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University. Learn more about Kathleen and her work at kathleendriskell.com

Birdwatching in the Park

In celebration of World Migratory Bird Day come birding with TreesLouisville! We will be spending a few hours in Shawnee Park looking at birds and identifying different species.
This event is not just for experienced birders and you do not need anything special to attend! If you do not have binoculars, there will be a few extra pairs to borrow, or you can make a friend and share a set. Additionally there will be some bird identification books, if people want to learn the basics of how to properly identify different birds.

Tree Week Trail Trek in Jefferson Memorial

Shuttle Meetup:Climb Nulu, 1000 E Market St, Louisville, KY 40206
Meetup Time: 5pm
Participants will be shuttled out to Jefferson Memorial Forest for 2 simultaneous activities:
1. A trail running club meetup hosted by 'Gibbon Run Club' in which runners will travel the Siltstone trail until they meet back up with the bus off of Scott's gap road where there will be food and drinks.
2. Simultaneously, a group hike led by Louisville Nature Center employee Savanna Lotto will follow the Scott's Gap loop trail and return to the shuttle where the same food and drink will be provided.
The event will be based on a sliding scale of $10-$20+ per participant and will conclude after participants are dropped off at 8pm that evening.

Join Goshen Arborist Frank Doades on a walk for Louisville Tree Week to learn how to keep trees happy and healthy.
Healthy trees start with good planting methods and timing. Proper pruning strategies and timing of the pruning as well. Good mulch and mulching practices help too, while also limiting herbicide use on and around the tree. Limiting soil compaction on the roots and trimming girdling roots when visible will also help them to succeed. Frank will teach you all about this!

Wilderness Louisville Forest Adventure Campout

Join JMF staff for a family-friendly fall exploration and campout at Jefferson Memorial Forest.
The event is held near the Forest’s Environmental Education Center and offers a wide variety of activities showcasing all the Forest has to offer.
Afternoon activities include archery, climbing wall, guided hikes, pumpkin decorating, hay rides, and nature play. Nighttime activities include spooky hike, stargazing, and s’mores by the bonfire.
Program meets in the Horine Reservation.
FEE for camping: $25 family campsite, $15 field, festival-style camping.
